Weakened Weekend Reading

Chain-Gang All-Stars Book Cover

Who has too many pens and feels under the weather this week? This guy. While I gradually work on my next review, I’m taking a queue from my pen peers and sharing a list of interesting reads from around the internet.

Jeff Abbot provides a closer look at Opus 88’s annual limited edition, and it’s worth a look for the photography alone. I currently only have one Opus in my collection, and these colorful editions make me want to change that.

Journaling: A Q2 Check-In – The Well Appointed Desk

I am in awe of anyone who goes beyond basic writings when it comes to their journal. I try to keep mine colorful by using a variety of pens and inks, but Laura’s examples shown here kick things up a notch (even if she wasn’t able to journal every day.)

Putting an Extra-Fine Point on It: Pens and Pencils for Tax Season – The Gentleman Stationer

Joe has the right idea here. The whole point of specialist stationery is to add some flavor to the mundane, and it doesn’t get much more mundane than taxes. Boot up your prep software of choice, the Tax Man cometh.

A birthday road trip in the PNW – April Wu (aka PenguinsCreative) via Substack

Those of us here on the west coast of the United States have it pretty good when it comes to road trip destinations. One can see virtually all of the major climate zones this world has to offer with one to two calendar days and a whole lot of driving. And when you’re a professional stationery nerd like April, you come out of it with some beautiful personal documentation.

Traditional Media

The Three Body Problem – Netflix

I love a good existential-drama sci-fi story. I can’t speak to the source material (which is probably better.) I can’t confirm the reviews (which are mixed.) But I can tell you I binged the whole season and I’m hungry for more. I’ve already jumped down the rabbit hole of the novels’ lore and explanations the scientific theories this story explores. If you need something new to watch, this is worth checking out.

Chain-Gang All-Stars – Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah

Chain-Gang All-Stars tells the story of the not-so-distant future of entertainment called hard-action sports. Incarcerated people are given the “opportunity” to compete in televised, highly-monetized, life-or-death combat against their fellow prisoners. The story follows people in the system, fans consuming the content, social-justice groups who oppose the barbaric evolution of the modern prison industrial complex. Not exactly a light-hearted read but who knows. I’m only half-way through.
