Karas Pen Co. Modal Review

Karas Pen Co Modal atop the Crab Pen Holder

One if the first pens I ever reviewed on this blog (and in fact the first pen I spent real money on) was the Karas Pen Co. Render K back in 2017. That pen was swiftly followed by the Fountain K, and over the years my Karas collection has only increased. Just as my collection has grown, so too has their catalog. So when I saw their latest creation at the California Pen Show I scooped one up, hesitating only long enough to decide on the color. Time to take a look at the Karas Pen Co. Modal.

The Pen

The Modal is Karas’ take on a bolt action pen (actually, it’s their second,) utilizing a thumb-actuated j-hook mechanism to expose and retract the writing tip. My chosen Modal (the Ultra Black) is made from 6061-T aluminum and, as the name would suggest, is finished in anodized matte black with a black clip and black Delrin slider mechanism. The clip is thick and sturdy, reminiscent of the clip on the Ink fountain pen but with no exterior screws or fasteners. The thumb button that activates the pen is slightly oval-shaped, with an asymmetrical convex profile that improves the comfort and overall ergonomics of the pen. Like many other pieces in the catalog, the Modal is available in an assortment of colorful anodized finishes, as well as tumbled raw aluminum and polished brass. If you’re attending a pen show you may also find it available in the increasingly-popular Ultem material which I only regret passing on a little bit.

The Modal takes the popular Pilot G2 gel refill, shipping with a 0.5mm cartridge installed, and is compatible with other 110mm-long pen refills. If Parker-style refills are your thing, the standard Modal can be made to fit them with the additional Modal Parker Conversion Kit, there is also the Pocket Modal which accepts them natively and features a ringed grip section.

Pro Tip: Shave about half a millimeter off of the Uni-Ball One refill for a perfect fit.

As with many of Karas’ other pens, the aluminum structure gives the Modal a nice, lightweight feel at just 24 grams. This is slightly heavier than a Twsbi Eco (21 grams) or roughly the weight of two Pilot G2s (11 grams each) for reference. The smooth, nearly seamless barrel measures in at 11.11mm, which is just on the edge of what I consider to be a comfortable grip width (but I do appreciate the symmetry.)

The Opinions

Any time Karas Pen Co. introduces a new product line, they have my attention. As mentioned up top, I have been in their ecosystem for a while now. Their machined pens offer equal parts small-shop charm and heavy-metal durability that make them not only a joy to use, but very easy to recommend. The Modal is no exception. In terms of functionality, it’s a ten. It serves as a G2 housing exceptionally well by providing a comfortable writing experience with virtually no tip-rattle, the clip is sturdy and seats the pen deep into whatever pocket or sleeve you choose to put it in, and the clockwise activation rotation of the bolt mechanism feels more intuitive than other bolt action pens I’ve used.

The standout feature of this pen is the button. As explained in their own product description, most bolt-action pens use a rounded button on the bolt and they wanted to make something unique that also enhances functionality. While I wouldn’t say that I have run into issues or discomfort with rounded bolt buttons, I’m surprised by how much the unique shape and curve of the Modal’s adds to the experience. Its a small change with a big impact.

The Verdict

Overall, this is a great pen. It is not as universal or as magnetic as some others, but it excels at its assigned purpose. The Modal is not only an excellent vehicle for the Pilot G2 refill, but an incredibly well-built device that should provide a lifetime of capable, reliable use. If you’re in the market for a sturdy, reliable every day carry type pen, the Modal by Karas Pen Co. should definitely be on your short list.
